Dubai is not how Doraid thought it would be. He had heard a lot about all the opportunities for young people here, for wealth and happiness. That, he says, is all an illusion. Hisham is more optimistic. Perhaps, he thinks, when he has gained sufficient experience in Dubai he will be able to find a job in Europe. Hisham shares a room with three colleagues in the worker accommodation units of the supermarket. Doraid has a small flat. We met both Doraid and Hisham on a Friday afternoon at the side of a volleyball pitch in Jumaira-Beach-Park.

Doraid: Doraid. I am from Palestine. My mother is from Syria. I am 26 six years old. I work here in the sale in Dubai.

Hisham: Okay my name is Hisham. I am from Syria. I am born in Syria. My age 27. I have electrical and mechanical Institute, I was learning there. And now I am here. I work in Carrefour in the recieving department.

Doraid: Me, I like to much politics. You know. I watch to much television. You know, because of what is happening in Palestine. You know. I think the problem not between the people. Its between…al Hukuma….the government, you know. This is the problem. Because the Europeans help, not help. They help a little Israel. Because of that we don’t…. and then the people, we don’t have ichtikak….mafish Ittisal…communication. We don’t have this with the people of Europe because of this ….I don’t know to much. Some little people would say all Europeans are not good but same with the Europeans they would think all Arabs are terrorists. Like this.

Hisham: Sometimes when you are watching TV you see one …in the war in Palestine…you see one person from West he is looking for the Palestinans. He is helping the people. Sometimes you see this. And then you see in Irak soldier fighting. How this is different looking. This one and this one. We don’t have any direction for this and this. I see that.

Doraid: We have different looking for the European people and the American people. We don’t look the same ….we don’t have the same idea for all…no, we have different for Europe and the Americans. I go to Europe, me, I go to France, I go to Belgique. No, but we hate the Americans to much. I think all the Arabs hate the Americans. But the Europeans not to much. We like the French. Germany is good. No, I am not joking. And all the problems in this world from America. I am shure.

Doraid: I like Hizbollah in Lebanon, I like Hamas in Palestine. Like anybody here. Because nobody go to America. America is coming to Irak, no? I see it like that. In Irak the people are there and America is coming and saying you have islach al damawiya shamil (weapons of mass destruction) but you can’t see anything. Only for make problem for the oil and to help Israel. For that I am very happy when I see a dead soldier from America or England. Because you see in Abu Ghrarb before and in Falludja just now and Hat some people they just killed him in the mosque, just like that.
